AN INVESTIGATION ON TEACHER ETHICS OF HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS By Kalpana and R. Shoba

Abstract

Teachers occupy a place of paramount importance in any system of education. Teachers should be role models, who should serve for students not only as examples of high education but of decent behavior as well. That is why each violation of teacher’s ethics may cause some really serious consequences and turn into crucial mistakes. Teacher ethics refer to good conduct. In modern times members of different groups are increasingly facing ethical dilemmas to define right and wrong conduct. When  people  see  others  around  them  engaging  in  unethical practices,  they  become  inclined  to  get  the  advantages  through  unethical means. Ethics are important because they allow society to continue to function, helping people to interact and live their daily lives in a functional way. They are important because they can govern a person’s code of behaviour and prevent moral wrongs from occurring.  This study attempts to measure the level of teacher ethics of high school teachers. The sample consists of 240 high school teachers. Teacher Ethics Inventory was constructed by S. Sathyagirirajan. Survey method was employed to describe and interpret what exists at present. The findings reveal that high school teachers differ in their teacher ethics based on gender, marital status, age, type of family, locale and medium of instruction.
